RAV4 features a range of our advanced passive and active safety technologies. From an ingenious Safe-T-Cell with impact absorbing crumple zones, to dual stage SRS airbags, advanced braking systems and Vehicle Stability Control (VSC), the vehicle is designed both to assist the driver in avoiding accidents and to help protect everyone on board if a collision should occur.
Our ingenious Safe-T-Cell construction is designed to offer driver and passengers as much protection as possible in the event of a collision.
The Safe-T-Cell is a high-integrity cabin, with crumple zones front and rear.
The crumple zones are designed to progressively absorb impact energy, while the underside of the cabin is reinforced to minimise cabin deformation in side, rear or head-on impacts, so that there is protective space for everyone in the car. It also helps to deflect impact energy away from the driver and passengers.
The use of impact absorbing materials helps reduce injuries to occupants in the car while an impact absorbing bracket on the front fender also helps to lessen any damage caused to anything (or anyone) the vehicle collides with.
Whether it's on a slippery wet road at night or bouncing over loose grit on a country trail, it's all too easy for the wheels to slip during cornering especially when taking evasive action. Which is why Vehicle Stability Control (VSC) is now fitted as standard on all RAV4 models.
VSC is an intelligent active safety technology that dampens under-steer and over-steer. Under-steer occurs when a vehicle loses traction in the front wheels during cornering and tends to continue in a straight line despite the steering wheel being turned. Over-steer occurs when a vehicle loses traction in the rear wheels and the tail begins to slide.
Vehicle Stability Control senses when the vehicle is beginning to slip during cornering and automatically adjusts engine power and braking force to each wheel individually to help keep the car moving in the intended direction.
VSC is integrated with Electric Power Steering (EPS) and (in AWD models) with the All Wheel Drive system to give the driver improved control. There's also a steering assist function that resists over correction at the steering wheel and provides extra torque to help correct sideways slides when necessary.
All grades of RAV4 come with 16-inch ventilated discs at front and 15-inch solid discs at rear, and have our world class braking technology - Active Braking with intelligence (AB-i) - fitted as standard.
This advanced brake system incorporates Anti-skid Braking (ABS), Brake Assist (BA) and Electronic Brake Force Distribution (EBD).
These advanced braking technologies work together to help ensure that RAV4 can stop safely and quickly in an emergency.
ABS continually monitors the car's wheels and if it detects the beginning of a lock up, it automatically adjusts brake force to free it, which helps the driver to keep control of steering in sudden braking situations. EBD works in harmony with ABS and helps to minimise stopping distances by distributing braking power to the wheels with the most grip. It also adjusts brake balance front to rear, depending on load.
And to help ensure that RAV4 pulls up quickly in an emergency, Brake Assist interprets a quick push of the brake pedal as an emergency stop and automatically provides additional brake force to help stop the vehicle in the shortest distance possible.
Every model in the RAV4 range comes equipped with Traction Control (TRC) as standard. Traction Control monitors each wheel individually and if it detects any wheel spin it automatically adjusts engine power or applies brake force to compensate.
The system is highly sophisticated and works to deliver maximum grip during acceleration whether the driver is moving off from a standing start, changing lanes on the highway or pulling out to overtake a slower vehicle on a country road. It can even sense when the grip on one side of the car is different to the other - like when there's mud, gravel, grass or ice on one side.
Dual Stage SRS airbags are standard across the RAV4 range for the driver and front passenger.
A sensor detects whether there's anyone in the front passenger seat and measures their size so that it knows if there's a child in the seat. The Dual Stage SRS Airbag system can vary the rate of inflation and airbag pressure for each of the front airbags to provide optimum protection.
SRS airbags are just part of RAV4's passive safety technology. The vehicle also houses driver and passengers in a rigid, high integrity Safe-T-Cell with crumple zones front and back, has Active Headrests in the front to minimise the effect of impacts from behind and uses Electronic Locking Retractor (ELR) seatbelts in the front.
In the front, RAV4 has height adjustable, 3-point Emergency Locking Retractor (ELR) seatbelts for the driver and the front passenger and 3-point Automatic Locking Retractor belts in the outer rear seats.
There are three Child Restraint Anchorage points fitted in the rear header section helping ensure that little ones can travel safely and securely in child seats and baby capsules.
So whenever you decide to pile the whole family in the car and head off for a day out, you'll have the peace of mind that comes from knowing that everyone, big, small, tiny and in-between can travel safely buckled up.
Front fog lamps illuminate the foreground, are designed to be used at slower speeds in situations where visibility has been seriously reduced. It is illegal to use them in good visibility as the low beam can cause excessive glare to oncoming traffic especially when the road surface is wet.
